Actor Andrew Keegan has finally addressed rumors that he started a cult.

The “10 Things I Hate About You” actor said on iHeartRadio’s “Pod Meets World” podcast Monday that he “immersed himself in the culture and the community” of Venice Beach after moving to California in his 20s .

“There was this interesting group of hippie guys in Venice, if you will,” Keegan, 45, told hosts Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle.

“I’m sure there’s definitely a lot of spirituality on the west side. I was connected with a few people and we had this opportunity. There was the old Hare Krishna Temple… and it was sitting there empty and we thought, ‘Yo, why don’t we just get some people together and let’s open this place?'”

Keegan and his friends opened a “spiritual community center” in 2014 that they called Full Circle.

“Looking back, it was crazy. I invested tens of thousands of dollars, but we opened it and spent three years really building a great group of friends,” he said. “We experienced something really significant from 2014 to 2017.”

The “7th Heaven” alum said opening the center was his way of doing something “positive for the community.”

But just a few months after Full Circle opened, rumors of cult-like activity began circulating, only reinforced by a Vice article titled “One of the Stars of 10 Things I Hate About You Started a Religion.” became.

“Looking back on it now, I think: I don’t know anyone who’s been called a cult leader, so it’s kind of like a badge of honor,” Keegan joked, adding that Full Circle was the “opposite” of what they were can imagine.”

“They really created and put together a very interesting, colorful story,” he explained.

“We did almost 1,000 events in three years and it was really, really hard. It really helped for a lot of people. I still hear people say, ‘That was a great time.'”

Keegan starred alongside Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You.

“There was no doctrine,” Keegan continued. “We just brought people together. The Co-Creator’s Handbook was the handbook we used. Basically, it was a really cool community center for a lot of people in Venice for a few years.”

Full Circle’s community center permanently closed in 2017.
