Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra (Pro Max) models are said to bring weight savings thanks to the use of titanium. Details of exactly how large these reductions could be have now surfaced in a new leak.

One of the key leaks about the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra (Pro Max) models is that they will feature a titanium case instead of the steel case used on the current iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone Pro Max models. While the stainless steel has certainly helped give the current flagship iPhone models a premium look, some users have complained about the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s weight in particular and the sharp edges of both models. The iPhone 14 Pro Max weighs a whopping 240 grams, making it just 13 grams lighter than the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 hybrid phone and tablet.

That will change with the move to a titanium body for the iPhone 15 Pro and Ultra models, which will also have more curvature for better hand feel. Exactly how much lighter the new models will be, nobody could have guessed until now, although it is known that titanium has a similar strength to steel but is around 40% lighter. That’s not to say the iPhone 15 Pro and Ultra will be 40% lighter, as they’ll continue to use glass on the front and back of the designs – the latter to optimize wireless signal connectivity, as glass is more permeable than metals.

A known leaker @Tech_Reve (Revegnus) has Posted Details on the weight reductions we can expect. The iPhone 15 Pro is reduced from the 206 grams of the iPhone 14 Pro to 191 grams, a weight reduction of 15 grams. The weight of the iPhone 15 Ultra is reduced by 19 grams, dropping it from 240 grams to 221 grams. Assuming the specs are correct, both represent significant weight reductions and highlight one of the clear benefits of going from steel to titanium for Apple’s next-gen flagship iPhones.

Apple currently uses “aerospace-grade” titanium in its Apple Watch Ultra, which it says offers “the perfect balance of weight, durability, and corrosion resistance.” The most obvious downside to switching from steel to titanium is the cost, which can be significantly higher. This coincides with rumors of significant price increases for the iPhone 15 Pro and Ultra, with speculation that both storage options will see price increases of at least $200 each.
