Gran Turismo narrowly surpassed Barbie at the box office for the second year in a row

New blockbuster ‘Gran Turismo’ barely outsales ‘Barbie’… for the second weekend in a row

“Barbie” has been beaten for the second weekend in a row – but not by much… if anything, her rivals are struggling to keep up – which says a lot about this juggernaut.

Box office numbers are in and the latest big movie to hit theaters this weekend was Gran Turismo – the video game-based film that tells the true story of how a gamer became a professional racer. .everything from getting a controller.

The film – starring Archie Madekwe, David Harbour And Orlando Bloom — took first place and grossed just $17.3 million domestically… that’s just ahead of “Barbie’s” $17.1 million.

What that tells you… people still flock to see it Margot Robbie and Co., also 5 weeks later. In other words, “Barbie” has a lot of staying power – and continues to dominate.

Last week, WB’s other release — the superhero film Blue Beetle — was the first to knock “Barbie” off the top spot…but again, by a hair’s breadth. “BB” only made about $25 million on its debut weekend, just $4-5 million more than “Barbie” that same weekend.

Even then, “Barbie” still performed quite well, and will likely continue to do so for the next few weeks.

Imminent blockbusters that will have a shot at Barbie include… Denzel in The Equalizer 3 (September 1), My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, and The Nun II (September 8) and finally… “A Haunting in Venice” (September 15). After that, there will be a lot more heavyweights in October… which will almost certainly knock “Barbie” down a few spots in the leaderboard.

Bottom line, it’s pretty simple… ‘Barbie’ has proven to be the smash hit of the year (so far), and it’s rolling in the dough and more while continuing to bolster ticket sales. There’s no word yet on when it will be available on streaming services – at this rate, Warner shouldn’t be in a hurry.

Who knew a movie about a doll would be the box office hit of 2023?!?
