Holiday Bowl brings back San Diego’s legendary fireworks display for the second time

SAN DIEGO – An iconic fireworks show returns to Petco Park this holiday season to celebrate San Diego’s premier postseason college football event.

The KGB Sky Show – a lavish show synchronized to music from local iHeartRadio station – will once again light up the skies as a follow-up celebration to the annual Holiday Bowl, due to take place on Wednesday 27 December.

It is the second year in a row that the KGB Sky Show will be following the bowl game in San Diego, which will feature teams from Pac-12 and ACC.

“I can’t tell you how excited we are that the Holiday Bowl will once again be home to the KGB Sky Show this year,” said Dennis DuBard, current President of Sports San Diego. “Thanks to this partnership and our good friends at iHeart, the fan experience at the (Holiday Bowl) will be among the best in the country.” Our fans have a great night ahead of them!”

The KGB Sky Show first took place in 1976. In 2004, however, the spectacle was linked to college football and was held every year after a San Diego State University football game until 2019.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of SDCCU Stadium, the event did not take place for two years. Its future remained uncertain as Snapdragon Stadium officials said the show literally couldn’t fit in the new facility given the huge parking lot.

Until Sports San Diego, the nonprofit producing the Holiday Bowl, and representatives from iHeart Media joined forces to revive the KGB Sky Show and incorporate the spectacular fireworks display into postseason play last year when they moved to their new home at the Petco park moved .

“101.5 KGB and the entire iHeartRadio group are delighted to once again partner with the Holiday Bowl. The football game followed by the KGB Sky Show is a San Diego tradition,” said Noreen Ippolito, San Diego Market President of iHeartMedia Markets Group, in a press release. “This year’s fireworks show … will create the best game day experience for those who live in and visit San Diego. “

The Holiday is one of four bowl games taking place on December 27 including the Military Bowl, Duke’s Mayo Bowl and the TaxAct Texas Bowl. The game kicks off just after 5 p.m. at Petco Park.

Tickets for the game and the Sky Show are expected to go on general sale on Thursday 14 September. Fans can get more information on how to snag tickets to the game when it goes on sale by signing up for the Holiday Bowl email list here.

In addition to the annual game and fireworks display, exciting holiday events will take place in downtown San Diego leading up to the big event, including the Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade, the Snapdragon Bowl Bash, the Tailgate Party and the 5K Walk/Run. Visit the Holiday Bowl San Diego website for more information about these events.

This year’s Holiday Bowl marks the 44th year of hosting the event, which was previously held in Mission Valley until it was moved downtown.
