According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is aiming for the top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max to account for about 35-40% of initial iPhone 15-series shipments when it launches next month. That would give Apple’s most expensive model the highest share among the four models in the lineup, with Apple targeting a 10-20% higher shipment of the Pro Max than the iPhone 14 Pro Max last year.
One of the main features that will draw users to the “iPhone 15 Pro” Max is expected to be the periscope lens camera, which will allow for a higher optical zoom of 5x-6x compared to the 3x optical zoom of the current models. The new periscope lens camera will be exclusive to the Pro Max model this year before expanding to the smaller iPhone 16 Pro next year.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max, the most expensive iPhone, accounts for 35-40% of iPhone 15 series shipments, the highest percentage. iPhone 15 Pro Max shipments also grew 10-20% year over year in the second half of 2020 compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max over the same period. This means Apple is bullish on the periscope selling point, which is only available in the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The phased introduction of the Pro line will allow Apple and its exclusive periscope lens supplier, Largan, to begin producing 15-20 million iPhone devices equipped with the component this year before expanding by 70-70 million next year. 80% to grow to around 30 million.
Kuo points out that the periscope lens costs about three to four times more than a high-end traditional lens, meaning Largan will benefit significantly from its partnership with Apple to provide the component. The new lens for the “iPhone 15 Pro” Max and other improvements could see Apple increasing the cost of the Pro models by at least $100 compared to the current lineup.
The iPhone 15 range will launch in just a few weeks, with rumors pointing to an event on Tuesday 12th September. Pre-orders should start a few days later, with the launch following on Friday 22nd September.
Some rumors have suggested that the launch of the Pro Max model could be delayed by a few weeks, but Kuo reported earlier today that bulk shipments of this model will start this week, so while there could be early supply shortages, the “iPhone 15 However, Pro” Max is expected to be available alongside the rest of the new range.
