October 7 victims demand UNRWA be declared a terrorist group

An initiative to declare UNRWA a terrorist organization is being led by the Shurat HaDin Law Center, which represents dozens of victims of the October 7 massacre.

Shurat HaDin’s initiative is aimed at the Ministry of Defense. The organization argues that there is a solid legal basis for such a designation. Their statement, which consists of arguments spanning eight pages, was presented to Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. If Gallant accepts the proposal, he would be able to exercise his authority to declare UNRWA a terrorist organization, but would be subject to Shin Bet’s security recommendation services.

Law Center President, Attorney Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, commented: “It is now clear to everyone that UNRWA has opened its doors to Hamas terrorists in an unprecedented way,” under the guise of a humanitarian organization that perpetuates a false and dangerous historical narrative , they themselves have become the central headquarters of a terrorist organization, some of whose employees have murdered innocent Jews themselves.”

The current initiative comes against the backdrop of the IDF’s recent revelation of the Hamas command center in the Hamas tunnels beneath the UNRWA headquarters, which operates on behalf of the United Nations in the Gaza Strip.

Darshan-Leitner continued: “UNRWA is no longer a humanitarian organization – it has become a full-fledged jihadist group.” This means that the defense minister has all the reasons and legal evidence to designate it a terrorist organization. This designation is the need of the hour to prevent the next victims of terrorist violence and accelerate the collapse of Hamas rule in the Gaza Strip.” Shurat HaDin founder Nitsana Darshan-Leitner (Source: MARC ISRAEL SELLEM)

Shurat HaDin’s main goal, according to its website, is to combat terrorism and protect the rights of Jews worldwide. The Tel Aviv-based legal center fights boycott, divestment and sanctions initiatives and challenges those who seek to delegitimize the Jewish state. Advertising

UNRWA was founded in 1949 as a UN body to assist Arabs displaced during Israel’s War of Independence. It has since extended refugee status to the descendants of those displaced, allowing these families to apply for refugee status for 75 years.

While the organization initially looked after around 750,000 refugees, it now supports almost six million.

Shurat HaDin’s previous legal actions

After October 7, the organization launched an initiative to establish a Legal War Room to coordinate legal efforts around the world, both to defend Israel and to take legal action against Hamas and its supporters.

In the past, the Law Center filed a formal complaint against the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for biased and unethical behavior against the State of Israel. They also handle civil lawsuits against Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the PLO, the Palestinian Authority and other non-state actors.

The revelation, led by the Shin Bet, that IDF soldiers had discovered a tunnel shaft near a UNRWA school sparked the latest lawsuit.

The shaft led to an underground tunnel that served as a key Hamas military intelligence base and ran beneath the UNRWA headquarters in the Gaza Strip. Many weapons were found in the building’s offices, including firearms, ammunition, grenades and explosives.
